    Premade random wire recieves nothing

Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, I do know about a continuity test but I wasn't looking forward to it because it's up in the air. :) But I can see I will have to check if the problems carry on. If I do this again I will be checking it before I do anything. I have been playing around with...

    Premade random wire recieves nothing

Hi... I bought one of these - https://archive.is/BvPAw - because my old random wire died years ago. I've put it up going the length of my garden, a few metres in the air. I made sure I used insulators on both ends and kept the entire thing from touching anything but those. It doesn't do...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

I never said thank you did I? Thank you for that, it was interesting and I think I'm getting the hang of it. Just wondering now, on a completely different note... are there any good frequencies to listen to for ships? I mean for aircraft you probably start off on the NAT air routes, for US...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Ah right. I didn't realise it was possible for it to skip straight over like that. So presumably at night I should be able to go 40m and below and hear stations which are further away, but the closer strong ones such as 5505 etc. will start to disappear? I think I'm gradually learning, thanks...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

I usually see what the conditions are like with VOLMET on 5505, 5450, DWD on 10100.8, NAT-A on 5598, the buzzer on 4625. All generally strong in the day, dead at night. Just to save confusion, I am in the UK, so these are quite close to where I am.

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Thanks for the links guys. Is the Overcomer Ministry still everywhere you look? My wire is a bit over 20ft. Eek! Here in the middle of the night, to my untrained ear, it doesn't sound overloaded, just completely dead other than some AM stations. Same with the telescopic and the scanner. Is...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Well, it came through on Tuesday. Great little thing - it's definitely at least as good as the scanner and the quirky controls aren't a problem at all. Being able to spin a tuning knob is nice, as well as having all of the keys backlit and not having to take the batteries out to charge them...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Okay then. In the end I went with the 1103 as I'm not exactly rolling in cash and I couldn't justify the extra 40 odd quid for the Sony to myself. You do get an antenna with the 1103 too. Looking at the reviews I'm still completely torn between the two. You two are doing exactly the same thing...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Hmm. I mean I pretty much only listen to utilities and anything but AM broadcasts, so I could probably live without the sound quality, scanning, memory naming and synchronous detection etc. Yes I saw about the volume and the controls. And the virtual analogue display whatsit looks like a bit of...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Ah ok. I understand that. In the end I just want one which will be able to make use of a longer long wire if I ever make it so, rather than hitting a limit and getting drowned out. At the moment I have a random wire going once diagonally across my garden, but as I've probably said, that plus the...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Heh, yes I think that Super 909 is a bit much for me right now :D The speaker is okay, I don't listen to music on shortwave much... When you say about the antenna being safe to use, do you mean that it can actually damage the radio? The tips you posted the link to earlier say that it 'can...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Thank you Nightshade. Some interesting stuff there! That Sony sounds fantastic, especially considering the price you can get it new for. I see what you mean about the sensitivity. With the scanner, I always have the attenuator switched on because otherwise it is overloaded by the signal. I...

    MVT-7100 vs ATS-505 vs DX-394

Hi everyone... I've been bitten by the bug of listening to utilities and amateurs on HF, but I only have a Yupiteru MVT-7100. From personal experience and reviews on the internet though, it seems to do a very job for a handheld scanner. I don't have much money to spend, and I was having a look...
