Each knob has (I think) 3 mini-LEDs inside, so 2 knobs will be 120 mA more draw on the source, or about a quarter-watt. I'm sorry that I don't know if your radio has a pot or a toggle for a dimmer.
To be safe, I'd limit the current to the LEDs a little by putting a 1/4-watt, 100-ohm resistor...
Some of the NGPs are helically wound vertical dipoles and are actually fed at the center by having the coax go up through the center of the fiberglass mast and then solder to the ends of the antenna windings. That's how it's done on marine VHF antennas.
On UHF, Maxrad makes an endfed halfwave...
Someone suggested having another operator listen to give you an audio report. That's a very good idea. Also have him/her listen one channel up and one channel down to see if there's any bit if your audio when you're talking your loudest. If there's adjacent channel noise after the diode mod...
Thanks!
Thanks for that. Oddly, I found this forum a couple of pages ago, made a bunch of posts (mostly answers to questions), then browsed away without bookmarking it. So it took me awhile to find my way back and find your answer.
<sheesh> Sometimes I'm such a "maroon".
Now to find a...
It sounds like you've done some good stuff already, like making sure your power supply is good, although that won't help with antenna match. I'd suggest a few things, though.
1) The supplemental ground leads seem like a good idea at first, but I'd remove them. They're long, and will be...
Hiya, folks. I've recently picked up a couple of these as projects to refurbish. One came with an EFJ land mobile "coffin" mic that I know is wrong for this radio (it was just in the box, doesn't fit anyway). The other radio has had the original 5-pin locking jack changed (sloppily, I might...
Further ideas for noise suppression
A couple things haven't really been covered, so I'll toss in my $0.02 worth. Where is the radio picking up its DC ground? If it's through the mounting screws, are all the mechanical connections nice and bright? I always run a separate lead with lugs and...
