An update. For those that cannot locate the service manual for the Hy-Gain 3108 AKA Hy-Gain 8, use the Hy-Gain 2705 service manual available online. The alignment procedure worked for the HG8.
The radio is pristine and I wanted to be sure it was working good, but checking for power, found SSB...
Nomadradio, I will give it a shot. As soon as I open the radio, I will post what I find. I cannot locate this units service manual, but I have to assume it is the base equivalent of the Hy-Gain 2705 mobile and I located that service manual online with alignment procedures. Cybernet SSB chassis...
Well, rule out the power although I have not opened the unit yet to check voltages at circuit level. I switched from internal to power from my 40W bench power supply. I definitely have less ripple from that PS, so I will see about later beefing up that internal PS. Measuring output power from...
Interestingly enough, my audio on AM transmits with a hum and I was thinking about checking that power supply. When I get to the bench, I am going to swap internal power to 13.8V external and recheck. Using an MFJ-815 for my measuments.
Using an MFJ-815
I got my hands on a very clean Hy-Gain 8, not the VIII version. It is a Cybernet, of course. PTBM059COX. I opened it up and it is not modded, but looks to have had the finals replaced at one point. Other than that, rig is super clean.
I hooked up a wattmeter and see that AM deadkeys around 5...
Forgot to tell you yes, this does have a 4 wire cord. I will spend the time tracing it. The switch is wired very differently than the M+2/U - JM+2/U versions.
I checked it out and that too has the M+2/U version, not the M+2. The one I have does not have the 3 extra contacts for the red and black wire. It appears to be a older pre/U mic. Thanks for looking!
I am afraid you are right. This may be a relay switching mike that is not adaptable to electronic switching as it is now. I spent hours chasing wires and comparing with the M+2/U schematics. I figured there may be something I missed or a mod or sorts to make it work. The mic is almost like new too.
I got my hand on a vintage Turner M+2. This is not the M+2/U. Internally it is very different than the M+2/U. Older components and no circuit traces. I got it with a 1/4 plug soldered at the end. Now, I have to assume this was designed for use for CB radio. After visually comparing the M+2 with...
Incredible insights here! Thanks to everyone here!
Here is where I start out: I managed to get 148 channels out of the stock set up using 4 xtals.
27.885Mhz is the high limit, is 26.265Mhz is the lower useable limit. Below 26.265Mhz the VCO voltage drops very fast and loses lock.
I will try...
I got a really decent TRC-490 that had it's SSB switch smashed. I was able to replace the switch and repair the knob and the radio works great. I just finished a cap replacement and it works really well. Since this radio has the MB8734 chip, I do not want to replace it and instead will go with a...
