people (many) who lower rf gain to make their radio quieter do so wrongly in the same sense as throwing the baby out with the bath water. that's incorrect use. except for special situations such as trying to talk with closeby stations, while there's undue outside interference or other nearby...
1st of all, the black box was not added after, as you said "it definately was"...it happens to be the module for "asc" (automatic squelch control). it has nothing to do with your "issues", and it also is controlled (asc/no asc) by the position of the squelch control.

i don't know if this is 40 yrs too late or not...(date above says 1969?)...tho i don't think your george is quite that old...in any event, unless unit is faulty u shouldn't have to use the "security feature", as long as the radio is plugged into a pwr source. all u should have to do is turn it...
