Is there a good mobile antenna that will cover these bands well on one antenna? I've been eyeing the ATAS120, but it seems so expensive and it doesn't seem to have good reports on those freqs. I want to work it with my 897 or 706.

Thanks,

Jerry

Jerry,

I think you'll probably have to look at a seperate antenna for VHF/UHF, rather than a single antenna for all bands. Most HF antennas could probably be made to work 2 and 70 cm but it would take some kind of switched matching arrangement. I don't know about the '897, but the '706's antenna input arrangement always seemed like a silly way of doing things, why not put the VHF/UHF antenna on a seperate connector rather than 6 meters, right? Beats me...

Thanks Doc. That's what I was kinda thinking but wasn't sure if there was some all in one wonder out there that I didn't know about.

Hey, would it be possible to use a moon raker 4 on 6m with a tuner, or is that really wishful thinking?

It's too cold out there now to put up another antenna on the base.

Thanks,

Jerry

I beleive that you ask for a mobile antenna. I use a

Comet SB-15. It is actually a tri bander but for example it gives me 4.5d gain on 2m and 7.2d gain on 446mhz. They have dual banders that will have similar numbers if 6m is not necesary

Thanks Tbone, that's what I'm looking for. I'd like to find one that I can mirror mount as well so I can take my 897 with me in the truck.

Tumbleweed, check this place out www.rfparts.com/diamond You could get some ideas on the antennas that they have. For mounting on a mirror mount you will have to use a cb antenna mount and mount a nmo or uhf mount with coax. You might have to enlarge the openning on the cb antenna mount. But that will work and it will be grounded. I think Firestick use to have a mount like what you need already made up.

Like the other guys posted look around and do some searches so that you get to know what is out there. What works for some may not work for you. I hope this helps, 73's

Jerry,

The Diamond NR-770HA is a 2m/70cm antenna that was designed to work with a very small ground plane like a mirror mount on a big truck. i picked up a used one and am going to put it on the dump truck. I have talked to 2 Hams that are truck drivers and this is the antenna that they recommended to me for a truck mount. let me know what you think. Take care my friend and I hope to catch you on the air.

Thanks Ed. I ordered the Diamond SG7900A and the K540KM mirror mount. I wished I would've seen your reply as well first. There wasn't really any pics of the antenna, but it read good. I should get it next week. I order from R&L Electronics, they're only about 3 hrs from me so I get it pretty much next day. I hope we get some contacts on the air.

Not too many do 6m here. Some of the local repeaters here are a pretty tight group.

I had a FT100D with the ATAS 120 screwdriver and used it for HF to 70cm. Yaesu does show it can be done you just need a duplexer to use 1 antenna on dual connections. If you live near the repeaters you use then this set up wil work fine but i live 70 miles from chicago and the vhf/uhf didnt work well till i got near the city. I bought a comet dual bander and it works well. Now the one thing I dont like about the ATAS 100/120 is that you can only operate 40 meter and up and ALOT of truck drivers talk 75 meter at night because 40 is all broadcast stations at night. There is a guy that makes a GREAT HF screwdriver (160-10meter) better than tarheel and high sierra in my opinion. read the reviews on eham and here is the link. check the link out well it has pictures of the screwdriver on several semi trucks AND it handles more than the legal limit (1500 watts+) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D">
