Yeah tapping into the switched side should be fairly simple and it'll turn on/off with the radio.

Not bad for a simple solution.

Make it adjustable and you can control the light level.

Ya not bad considering no need to mess with taking apart the faceplate/ panel. Will now think about powering it maybe going with a voltage reg as suggested if i can find an easy to tap switched 12v source. Thx for the comments guys.

12v to 4.5v = 75 ohm resistor
13.8v to 4.5v = 85 ohm resistor
8v regulator to 4.5v = 35 ohm resistor

Posting before & after pics in low light conditions with anytone 5555n. Not perfect but pretty decent considering no need to take appart front panel and easily removed if ever needed Total cost of this low tech lighting solution was probably $10.
