At least if that transformer starts "ticking" you can take the valve cover off and adjust it's rockers (if it doesn't knock you off yours first). Not only is it 3 phase but at over 50 KVA it may not even have a 220 primary. If Peter Dahl was still around that transformer would probably be in the vicinity of $7,500 new. Because it's 3 phase and huge it may only fetch it's weight in scrap metal as surplus. I would have been more impressed to open the transformer vault and find three big discrete transformers. So much more flexibility there.
Today if you need a big single phase plate transformer, the quality and prices available can not be beat. If you know where to look you can buy a 10 KVA for a few hundred dollars and a 50 KVA for around a thousand. Buy a remanufactured "pole pig" otherwise known as a utility pole transformer. They are available from 2,400 volts to over 11,900 volts. There is a company in North Carolina that sells them very reasonably online with delivery.
If you're not comfortable with a pole pig in your shack, locate it remotely. For example in the basement near the breaker box. I've had very good luck using RG-213 with HN connectors to carry the HV to the transmitter power amp. Connecting the braid to chassis ground and neutral greatly reduces the risks with the HV cable. Always break both legs of the 220 to turn off a pole pig because it will stayed fired up on one leg with the neutral still connected!
