I want to reduce the size of my 9 ft whip to around 7.5 feet, how much wire would I need to make a loading coil and would the coil be tightly space or a few mm gap between turns, I intend to use pvc coated wire stranded its about 2.5mm.

You're only going to need a couple of turns to reduce the antenna size by 1.5 feet. The number of turns will also depend on the diameter of the coil. The simplest way to do this is make the coil, and then hook up the main element with alligator clips, adjusting the tap point until you find how much coil you need.
