A Conservative Anti-War Essay

It has been a real horrorshow over there since day one, and this week it appears that all hell may be about to break loose, as the simmering, low-intensity civil war is close going to full-bore bloodbath mode here shortly.

This is going to be a rough year, worse than the last 3 by far.

And today is the best it will be, tomorrow is certain to be worse, and the next day, worse still. No matter if we stay or leave, makes no difference. But it looks like we are going to stay and bleed for several more years, just like Vietnam.

Well, here's my $.02...

A good buddy of mine, went to Iraq. He joined the Army in 2003 and went in with an Engineers batallion. Sorry I have no military background, so the wording may not be correct.

Anyway, he of course got sent to Iraq. Naturally we were all worried about him, and we kept in touch via E-Mail. He was just 20 years old.

His first Purple Heart was earned after the convoy he was in was hit by a makeshift blend of gasoline and polystyrene plastic. We know it as Napalm. He suffered burns to the back of his neck and head.

His next and last Purple Heart was earned while he was manning the machine gun of a Humvee riding in a patrol convoy. I will quote him...

"All of a sudden I saw the road bank flying at me, like a huge dirtball. Then I saw the flash, then nothing."

"When I came to, the Hummer was filled with smoke and I could hear people yelling. I tried to stand up and couldn't, I was lying on the floor."

"Two of my buddies dragged me out, that's when I saw what was left of my leg".

My friend, Specialist Richard Watson, damn near lost his leg that day. Someone detonated an anti-aircraft warhead that was planted along side the road. The blast ripped the Humvee apart and shredded Rick's leg.

After several surgeries, he still walks with a cane. 21 years old, two Purple Hearts, and permanently disabled.

Something to think about the next time we get all riled up, and gung ho, and get a "kill 'em all" hard on.

I hear you, 181. And there are tens of thousands of stories like your friend's, and some are quite a bit worse.

To say nothing of the innocent Iraqi victims....

I think every pro-war person should have to watch "Born on the 4th of July" with their heads in a vice and eyes pinned open like in "A Clockwork Orange."

Tragic, stupid, folly, farce, strategic disaster---and all based on a pack of LIES!!!!

(But I guess this is fine with the Bush-lovers, just so long as they get the ten commandments installed on the courthouse lawn, and keep the queers from getting married. Sycophant bastards!)

Highlander 821,

a very interesting read no doubt. I think it is sad that those who are war hungry have no relatives in the fight, no personal loss to face.

Obviously for me being active duty US Navy for the last 23 years, I strongly support our troops. Most all of us felt an overwhelming urge to go "kick ass" and show the world how we do our job after 9/11. We felt somewhat cheated and saddened that we were not put into a position to prevent 9/11. Almost a question of "where did we fail?". There are lots of questions that cover all political parties and various Presidents, but 9/11 happened and most is a mute point to debate here being 9/11 was a success in the eyes of those who hate America.

But, Iraq was a different story. No ties to 9/11. It seemed so obvious, but here we are years later, still there. There was never an exit plan because they thought everyone would give up and surrender just like they had done in the Gulf war in '91 (my opinion). I guess they decided to change their mind, and we are still there, without an exit plan. Hmmmm....I'll bet the next want-to-be- President elect will have a "master plan" and hype it big. Pick a political party, it won't matter. Democrats will want back in the White House, Republicans want to stay there. All candidates will have to sell themselves to the American public with their lies, and the current administration will walk away waving their arms, no longer their problem. He who has the best lie wins (again?). Aahhhh, American politics at it's finest. Sad part, none of these people lost a son, daughter, brother or sister over there, or had a child permanently disabled due to the horrors of war. They don't grieve every birthday, Easter, Christmas, and every other instance where a Mother or Father has something remind them of their sons and daughters who no longer can call them Mom or Dad. Only silence is with them.

With that said, I enjoyed your read. I ask that you (and others) keep in mind though, that not all of our Military personnel support this war, are not war-mongers (sp?) ourselves. Most of us would love to serve to keep world peace. But, when duty calls, we roger up and do the best we can to support the mission as laid out before us. We do our job because that is what we have sworn to do. We all have families also. I am not affiliated with any political party myself, and won't come out here and bash my Commander in Chief (i.e. the President), but I think I would have done a few things differently.

Thoughtful comments, Al.

Believe me, I support the troops. I want them brought home.

The fact that we have people who are willing to put it all on the line for people like me, who they don't even know, is amazing to me, and I have the utmost respect and admiration for anyone who makes it their job to protect the innocent.

That fact makes it even more terrible that our government would misuse and betray them the way they have repeatedly done, by sending them on fool's errands like Vietnam and Iraq. It is truly obscene.

Americans are starting to see the truth. 3 years and hundreds of thousands of destroyed lives too late. People should have listened to the truth. Slapping a yellow ribbon bumper sticker on your SUV isn't being a patriot---challenging the War Party is.
