At 25 minutes past midnight on August 28, 1939, Britain was about to engage in another European war. My father, Brian Herbert, G2WI, as an early member of the Civilian Wireless Reserve formed by the Royal Air Force, knew he would be “called up.” He had already relocated his wife and 6 month old son to her parents’ home near Cheltenham for safety.
