I don't know about the 'mounting plate' you're talking about, but I'd definitely consider a 'backing plate' on the newer cars/trucks. I would imagine there are several alternatives depending on how 'handy' you are (as in making your own).
I've recently gone from a pickup to a smaller car and wish there was an easy answer for 'large' antenna mounting options. Unfortunately, while there are certainly options, I'm not sure I wanna try them... yet. That 'large' does mean large (20 - 25 pounds worth)! Just not too practical for me and this car. Oh well.

I would try a junk yard and look for old police cars and state cars are even better! I have 2 but won't part with them:-(
