what radio is the better for ssb ss-158dx or tr-696fd1?

Don't know about the 158

the 696FD1 is a proven design in long standing - same board as DX-959 and others...

Not negating those radios, but an old 148,2950 or magnum are a better choice for a ssb operater.

Here is my 2-cents. I never tried the 2 radios that you are mentioning in your post, But i did see some reviews on the SS-158dx. The SSB on that model does drift. The Magnum OmegaForce S-45hp is a good radio from what i have seen on the reviews. Best SSB radio i ever had was the AR-3500 100wt. model, Rci-2950, Yeticom Optima 10 meter.
