AM on lower Freeband

Why AM on the lower part of the Freeband? Wouldn't SSB be a better way to get more of a reach, especially with the capabilities & cost of the radios it takes to get to those frequencies?

There is a little SSB and FM on the lower freq.s but mostly AM just like mostly SSB on the upper freq.s. Not sure why,but it seems to work well that way.Keeps the AM'ers from bothering SSB and the other way around.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT=":)"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">

if you keep going down to 26.265 - 26.300's there is alot of very good DXin' on USB. i hear lots of German and Spanish operators down there. i think 26.285 is the general call freq..check them out if you haven't already.

We have a lot of AM on 27.505!!! My best guess is because a lot of the the older Non-BCD chips (like the PLL02A) have been modified with a switch that controls the pin on the PLL that's value is 32. Therefore, 32 channels above Ch. 19 would be 27.505. A lot of truckers go up there to talk around here.

It’s a so-called “Gentlemen’s agreement”, SSB for above the FCC 40 and AM below. Once you get way below channel 1, 26.5 MHz or so, SSB becomes the dominant mode. There are a few FM channels in there as well, but they seem to be local groups.

26.285 USB is a so-called international call frequency, after a contact is made they QSY off to another frequency. When it gets real busy I’ve heard contact way into 25 MHz.

It all works out very good, but unfortunately there are a lot of Cbers that have a standard AM channels they use, then when it gets busy it’s easy to just flip a switch to go to a quieter channel. So you get the activity on 505 and others.

Incoming Region Produces X3 Solar Flare
    May 15, 2024 @ 14:55 UTC
Another major solar flare, but this time from an active region just beginning to turn into view off the east limb. It is possible that the group responsible is old AR 3654 from the previous rotation. The latest flare, an X2.99 event just peaked at 14:38 UTC (May 15). Stay tuned
