If you are relying on reducing the drive and having the radios ALC circuit clamp the amplifier output to a safe limit for your tuner, you may arc over the air variables on word peaks. That can be caused by brief periods of ALC overshoot on your word peaks. The scope would reveal the potential of this overshoot prior to any arc. Your ear will let you know as it's happening.

Then best not to hook up the ALC?

Ameritron AL-1500 .......
I tune my amp at 72-74 watts drive. ( It is rated for 100 watts maximum drive )
I then turn my drive level down to a maximim 55 watts.
Been running this tube amp like that for several years.

No ALC connected, but that is not a bad thing.
