AMPS?

I am waiting on my RF Italy 203. I believe it does 100 watts am and 200 watts ssb. This is going to be used as my base amplifier and are wondering how many amps do you think it will take to run this off my power supply. I have a 8 amp supply and one that is nearly twice the size of the 8 amp but it has no lables on it any where. Also I have never actually known what the amps needed to run just my 148GTL are.

If you have a 35 Amp you may squeak by but as far as leaving head or breathing room and not pounding the p!$$ out of your power supply then a Pyramid PS-52K would be ideal and can be purchased on some great deals I can help find you a deal if need be.

I assume your getting the RM Italy KL-203. Great little light duty low end amp for the money. Should draw 8-12 amps depending on what mode of talking your using and how hard you drive it. That said DO NOT overdrive this amp or it will not last long. On AM a 1 to 1.5 watt dead key and 8-14 watts PEP. On SSB 10-16 watts PEP will be plenty.

Hammer,
The KL203 will run on less but a 15 amp regulated power supply would be my choice. A Cobra 148GTL will use 3 amps an that leaves 12 amps for the KL203 an there a little lead way left, so the power supply does not dip on you when it get warm.................Oldtimer

Well since you have two supplies I would use them seperatly on different circuits if you can. The unknown power supply should have a data plate on it telling voltage input and amp's used as well as output. The size does not mean much. I have a 35 AMP switching power supply that because I got it with out the meter's is about the size of a cigar box. My laptop weights more then it does. On the other hand a 3 amp 12 volt regulated Pyramid power supply weights more and is larger surafce area wise of the case then my 35AMP Samlex.

If it where me I would get another Samalex 35 or is it Samlex 35 amp power supply in a mad minute. First it is light, it is quite, it has more capacity then you need, it can grow with you. It is quite on HF band and 2meter band I know for sure no birdies!!!I can not say enough about this supply. It is very tightly reglated. It only shows minor ripples under no load the second you put a load to it the ripples vanish on a scope of spectrum analyzer. I use mine for a President Lincoln with the MRF 455 final that does 65 watts clean on AM and I have no clue what she does on SSB never checked. I have a friend that has thr 25amp model and he use's it to power his RCI 2970 and again he has had his for at least the same 5 years I have had mine and never a problem. Always buy as much power supply as you can afford because in time you will almost always upgrade your gear and if you get more power supply then you need then that is one less then to have to keep buying constantly! No one wants to have 8 power supplies around because they kept going with the bare minimum each time that they needed! When old Elmers die they have 6 power supplies 3-4 variacs because they started with a 2.25 amp model then got a 5 amp model then a 10 amp model then a 15 amp and so on.........Switching power supplies are more effeicient with energy consumption and generate less heat as well! So your power bill to operate one is lower. If you need to take it some place you do not need a Hand Truck/dolly to cary it. A 50amp linear regulated power supply needs a body builder to move it a 50 amp switching power supply can be carried by the average 12 year old school girl!
