It might be more convenient if you have to adjust the audio levels when using the same mic. on different radios.
I used to have a D104 with a lap bar that had the mic gain control mounted on top of the base but like m42duster said,set it and forget it.

Just doing a short search the only place I've found that on is the Ebay link on the first post. That listing has ended. I did find a new TUG-9 for $275 while searching. You'll just have to Google it and see if something turns up.

Those things were popular in the 80's and faded away. I don't think anyone is making them anymore but I can't imagine it would be all that hard to make your own.
I am another set-and-forget user. Then again all my radios have a microphone gain adjustment on the front panel to fine tune things a bit. I would think the only time you would need to change a setting would be if changing radios and then only once to suit it.
gee, I followed the link and when I saw the font for the item, I remembered that I had seen that font somewhere before, it runs over itself and is odd.
