I don't know which uk this guy is talking about but its not the one I live in,
almost all if not all of what he says is bollocks, our legal FM radios were almost all ROM pll with sequential10kc spacing,
No splits/alphas & no rotations like the FCC band,
no pulling address lines with switches diodes or eproms,
we got an extra ch or 2 by pulling the crystal off frequency, a channel or 2 above or below the uk40,
the modded rigs usually had pll02a mb8719 mc145106 & a few with upd pll's,
some people had FM boards fitted to old AM sets & some AM/FM sets we pulled the high band crystal to get on the .125 uk frequencies,
There is no clipping diode limiters in FM rigs, he's talking bollocks again, you just turn up the deviation pot,
hundreds of thousands left on AM after FM had been legal for a while is Bollocks,
In Yorkshire FM by far took over AM in numbers of people because people who would not normally break the law started using cb's which were everywhere in shops & after a couple of years often discounted at far below original prices,
Before legal FM you could buy AM SSB & some export rigs from under the counter in a few shady shops or a mate who knew a bloke or a trucker that could get you one but there were not cheap,
You could talk significantly further on FM than AM & partly that was because there were far more people out there to talk to,
I liked the illegal aspect of CB,
I was using AM & SSB & talking over seas well before CB became legal,
The people crying for legal CB got on my tits,
something was lost after it all became legal even though I liked the sound of some FM rigs over AM rigs.
