This is my ASTROPLANE copy avanti AV-101, ALL manufactured in IRON.
I get better signal than a dipole, a loop and a slim-jim.

I think the sole reason for the hat on an Astroplane was to take advantage of the height restrictions back in the era it was originally invented,
If I was to put my astroplane back up I would remove the hat & extend the the upper radiator to 1/4wave,
I doubt Avanti ever fully understood the importance of the mast length & the importance of isolating the mast and coax at the correct distance below the hoop to get maximum performance from that design since its not in the patent.
The DB's posts about the Astroplane are by far the most informative posts on that design to be found on the WWW
