Hi Grogan, they are all similar yet different. I would stay away from the older 1st generation ones like the Galaxy Saturns. They had various problems and are getting like over 20 years old + now. In the new ones I like the 2980WX over the 2517. You get a 6 digit freq. counter opposed to just a 5 in the 2517 and get the Weather Ch's to boot AND for some reason they run about $25 less.

If you are going to run 10mtrs with it,some stop at 28315 and some that stop at 28315 and convert back to 10mtrs to run them on there,then they start on 10mtrs at around 28700,and are not good unless you want to run that high on 10mtrs.I run my 2980wx on 10am and fm also but mostly around 28420usb...73 de JW

I've had the 2517, 2980 and 2995, and pretty much what you hear about the mobiles is applicable to the bases.

I got over the "big black radio" attraction with buying a VS-70M and feel like I should have gone that route in the beginning. It's just a lot more flexible.

I either have or have had every one of them except a connex saturn and my trusty ole Excalibur SSB beats the brakes off all of them for receive. Only one thats been close is my Galaxy Saturn Turbo.
