CB Advice, please respond.

Hey there. I've recently been obsessed with purchasing a CB radio in anticipation for a New York city roadtrip me and a few friends are taking from Florida all the way up. I'm 18, make about $170 a week, and on a tight budget.

I was wondering if a radio shack brand would do the job fine enough for me to send and receive transmissions. I'm planning on waking up early tomorrow and heading down there to purchase this model www.radioshack.com/produc...id=21-1711 .

If anyone can give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum <img src=http://users.joplin.com/dutch64804/posticon57.gif ALT=":57">

Are you going to use the radio to talk to your friends as you travel, or just to keep tabs on road conditions?

Do they have CB`s?

How much time do you have?

What type of Vehicle?

Have you thought about your Antenna choices?

Let us know the answer to these questions, and we will offer some suggestions. <img src=http://users.joplin.com/dutch64804/posticon51.gif ALT=":51">

OK, since you have time, and are on a tight budget, you can look around online for a better deal. WalMart online has the Cobra 18WX ST II with weather and dual watch for under $50.00 and it is comparable to the R/S model you are looking at.

If you search , the Uniden Pro 510 XL can be found for around $45.00, it is not a bad little radio, but no weather.

Are there better radios? yes, there are, but for what you are going to do I think the Cobra would do fine for less $$.

For a antenna, I would do a web search for the Wilson Little Wil CB Antenna, it is a little Magnet mount antenna, with 12' of cable that works fine with a stock CB. These can be found for less than $25.00. You will have to throw a few dollars on-top of these items for shipping if you can`t find them local.

I am sure some of the other guys here can offer up some suggestions as well.

Yes,it connects to 12V at the fuse box, or for what you are going to do, you can get a cigarette lighter plug and power the radio off of the lighter (or 12 acssy plug if you have one)socket on the dash. Then you can just unplug it and put the radio out of sight when you are not in the truck.

To look at the cobra you can go here:

Click here to view the Cobra 18 at WalMart.com

that will take you to the page with the radio...and you might search around other sites, never know what you will find.

Also see if any of the other guys here can add anything else.

I have never used Thomas, but they have been around for a long time, I would think they should be fine.

Don't forget to order a SWR meter and take the time to learn how to use it. You will need to tune your antenna properly before using the CB for long periods of time, or you may damage the radio. The meter should come with instructions. If not, let us know and we can help you out.
