CB amp question

Just won a cobra 2000 gtl on ebay. It's not in "perfect" condition but hoping it works well. Anyone recommend a small amp to use for this radio in the home 20? any small foot warmer that might even plug into the wall and not require a power supply? suggestions appreciated!

You mean you just bought a 2000 on E-Bay. I just love it when I sell an item on E-Bay and 2-3 bidders are trying to "WIN", lol, usually works out great for the seller. As a buyer your trying to get a good deal, not win.

That said any small 2 pill class AB amplifier will work great with such a fine SSB radio like that. I would have a good tech go through the radio and check the power supply, touch up some solder joints, give it a factory alignment, and set the AM carrier for what ever amp you end up buying. Should be a great classic to hang on to.

I have ran a KLV 203P with my Grant XL and gotten excellent reports. Your 2000 should have similar output to my Grant, so it should match up pretty good. The factory rep told me that the 203P is AB biased. Whether it is or not, I do not get reports of the typical snap crackle pop sound you normally get with a class C amp on SSB.... just reports of clean audio. The 203P is very small, and you can power it with a small power supply. Puts out about 100 watts both on AM and SSB.

well with that being said, how about I'm just repeating what my notifications on Ebay said... Does that make you feel better?

I see your a newer ham judging by your call and looking on QRZ. Why would you want to risk your ticket running 11 meters with an amp? Sure the chances of getting caught are very low but there is no 100%. You have 10 meter privileges so why not run the amp there? I know 10 is not the most active but sometime you can be surprised just by calling CQ. You have received good answers for amps but if you're feeding into a piece of wet spaghetti then it's a waste of money. As i said before its all about the antenna.

And that's a good move on E-Bays part, make the buyer feel like a WINNER not just a buyer, congratulate him and tell him what a great job of bidding he did.

It's all good man not dogging you out, just tying to make a point. Too many people get caught up in the bidding part of E-Bay and get into the thinking mode of I gotta WIN. The goal should be to not over pay for an item and get a good or fair deal.

I would hate to "win" an auction, pay top dollar, and then have to send the radio out to be re-capped, tuned, aligned, and serviced all to the tune of say another 175 bucks.

Any way nuff said. The 2000 is a fine classic, hope you lucked out and got one that needs little or no service work. Should be a a great talker.

I myself I.M. him about the probability of getting caught on 11mtrs with a amp after getting his ticket.I dont run anything but a 148 and a a99 since 1992 when i got my lic.My browning mk3 is just 23 channels. And running a amp,no way.I have a D and A beige amp,but its converted to 40mtrs.73 de n0zna Late note,i get on 11mtrs just to tell a friend down the road to get on 10mtrs or 6mtrs,hehe

Nothing wrong I guess with a KL203, it's a low end low drive light duty amp that's priced right. If you break it you throw it away or sell it on E-Bay as fix-n-repair. If you do end up getting one add a fan and don't be long winded. A good AB amp is hard to find these days. A nice clean Texas Star 250 or 350 would work well. Just don't ever admit to a fellow ham you have it and talk on 11M with it. You use it for CW keying. (wink wink)

Especially for the trolls who might frequent this forum out of boredom. That's what's been stopping me from getting a amp for 11 meters, they're illegal for transmitting on 11 meters. It's tempting and all my cb buddies try to get me to buy and use one.
Well, my 959 is already disqualified from using because of the Viagra board onboard. Etc.,etc.,etc....... :headbang

All the amateur radio license holders around here, who talk on CB, use amps. They just don't post that info on internet forums.

And this just makes someone wonder why get a ham ticket. Just talk on all bands. Whats the difference if an unlicensed operator talks on hf, if a licensed operator wants to break fcc rules? Sounds a little hipacriticle.

I realize two wrongs don't make a right, but...........
