Got a Cherokee CBS-1000 on the desk tonight. Looks like it went through a metal shredder, lol... Cover is all mangled up and marked up.

Evaluation:
Carrier level too high (6w carrier).
Limiter removed.
Audio IC getting hot.
Off frequency.
Audio sensitivity down (receive and transmit).
Power supply cranked up to 16.89v.

Fixed so far:
Replaced limiter.
Set power supply to 14.1v.
Complete alignment.
Aligned RF stage.
Tuned output.

Now:
Carrier set to 3w, swings to 22w PEP, 14w peak and 8w average.
Audio sensitivity back where it should be.
Frequencies are spot on.
No longer getting hot.

Over the air reports say it's loud and crystal clear (using a stock cobra coffin style handmic) but bassy. Probably just the mic causing it to be bassy.

Now to find a decent cover.

Yes, this came from one of our local golden screwdriver guys. He wants to learn this stuff but he just won't listen. He did all this mess to this radio all for just a few extra watts that isn't gonna make a hill of beans over the air, plus it made the radio overheat.

Oh well, the new owner I know will take care of it and stay out of it.

Shame....
