Chirping on key up

I've just finished recapping a President Washington (858), that I had let some of the magic smoke escape from, it now has a chirp when the microphone is keyed. When it chirps, the needle bangs over to full deflection then settles to zero. It is TXing OK but sometimes RX seems to fade out. Keying the mic makes RX come back again. At the time of the smoke incident, the relay was stuck and was switching on and off by itself.
I also replaced a resistor that was fried.
Has anyone had this symptom happen to them, or know where I should start looking?

sounds like the audio line is connecting before the tx does.

I think it had dirty contacts, I cleaned them and it doesn't seem to be an issue now. I also tried one out of a hardly used Realistic that I have, made no difference.
