I'll put in a plus 1 for the Magnum 257. Good little radio to get your feet wet. Will do everything the AM/SSB CBs with type-acceptance will do, with maybe not the greatest receiver, but not too bad. (They are plenty sensitive, no problem there, but the front end is a little wide and lets in a lot of noise that doesn't need to be there.)
If you like DXing with it on 11 meters, you'll be all set to get your tech ticket and run that radio on 10 meters legally.
For the money, it is a lot of radio, the barefoot power should do nicely without an amp as long as you have a good antenna.
