Cobra 142 GTL

I wonder if I put in another varactor in paralell with CT3 if that would give me more tuning range...

That varactor mess needs to get removed, don't just add to it. Take that SMD crap completely out of there, a friggin' LED light would make a better varactor than whatever that combination is. And get rid of that electrolytic cap on the filter. It only stiffens the VCO control voltage and makes it respond slower.

No problem. I peel that crap out in the morning.

If radios could talk, this thing would jump into your arms begging for help. If we had a name to go along with the work, I would nominate this one for the 2026 golden screwdriver hall of shame. If you get this one going, it will surely treat you well for the rest of your life.

Yeah. Its going back on the shelf once fixed. This is what people did pre- export radio days. Added a watt or 2 and lost their mod, pull out a few parts to get screeching mod, mess with the switches and install a bunch of uppers and lowers, then to really screw things up for the next guy, just add in a few more parts, change some others and remove some. Fun huh!!!!
