Hello,

This isn't quite a step-by-step on how to go about installing the LED itself, but just to show some of the pictures along the way when I replaced the LED in my Cobra 146 GTL. I used a computer chip socket and sized-trimmed it down to accommodate the area. This way if I ever decide to change it out, it can easily be done without desoldering the whole front board again. As you can see in the pictures, the blue 4233BA Workman channel LED doesn't quite have the length of legs needed for the height, so using a socket was beneficial to shorten the gap. It isn't quite as high up as it needed to go, but it still turned out ok.

***Be sure to remove the film over the new channel LED. Save that for the very end after its installed!***

Last picture is the original channel LED that came out of it, and thats part # DR-202AL-87.

Height Differences even with the socket to be cut up/used:

Be sure to install the Workman Channel LED with the letters leaning towards the right:

While you are in there, replace that 1uf 50v capacitor: (Now my radio is fully recapped. :) )

All of those bridges had to be desoldered prior before the board can come out. (I am missing pictures of the process to remove the whole front.)

Have a good day everyone!
Great post! I hate blue, much prefer green, if I want a change. Nice work though, maybe pop a green one in next? Should take you all of 5 minutes with the socket!

After trying the blue one, I realized that it is a bit harsh on my eyes lol. If I can find that particular one in green, may give that a go next. :)

Workman does have a green display. If you can't find it easily, I'll help you out. Totally worth it. 146 GTL is a fine example of old school goodness.

After today, that blue is just a bit too much 100% lol. I will replace the bulb on the meter as well while I am back in there to an LED. I just dont want to have to take it all out again once the bulb gives up. That meter is attached to the faceplate itself on plastic hinges. Plastic is very brittle and luckily the meter works ok.

Just FYI, there's a way to dim that display to a comfortable level and the blue looks really good then.

Back around 2010 when the blue was all in, I can't tell you how many radios I put blue displays in. I started using window tint film on the display lens of the ones that wouldn't dim enough and they looked sharp.

If anything I may do that on a TRC-465 radio that basically its channel LED is entirely shot. Tried cleaning the channel selector and any cold solder joints, but no luck.
