Cobra 148 gtl

Hello all, I just picked up a Cobra 148 Gtl at a yard sale for $10.00, it's a plain jane 40 channel am/usb/lsb radio with no freq. counter or nothing that was made in 1996. The thing looks brand new, inside and out, however when you turn it on it does nothing..I was thinking that maybe somebody had hooked it up backwards and had blown a protection diode or something, but I don't know where to look..

Thanks Tim...If I sell it I let you know..(the idea that you want it like that makes me want to keep it.. )

I went ahead and pulled it apart, there were 2 white wires that terminated just in front of D44 that were smoked..(i.e. 90% of the insulation burned off of the wires, with one of the wires burned in two..) Just for kicks, I went ahead and tied the 2 broke ends together and it started working I hope that replacing these will fix this thing..Can anybody tell me what might have caused this or was it just from being hooked up backwards??

Damnit! I thought I was the only one garage salein' for rigs! I am famous for finding gold in a trash can! You got a great deal on that one.I ran into a 2000 that needed 12.00 in parts to get workin' again for 10.00 at a junk sale, the lady thought it was a broken clock radio! I probably could have gotten it for less but I think I gave it away when I let my jaw drop on the garage floor, and she thought it was "pretty wood" a real "collectable"

On your rig, sounds like a backwards plugin to me.

A 148 virgin for 10.00, ya' can't be unhappy about that!

take care, next time I will have to get up a little earlier......

LOL I love yard sale shopping for radios...You never know what people get tired of looking at...( I also got my 2950 this way)

I went ahead and replaced the 2 wires (Thanks for the soldering links Charger.. ) and it works fine..On a my rat-shack meter it deadkeys at around 4 watts and only swings to about 12 or so on AM..The pots still have that funky wax all in 'em so I'm assuming that it is untouched...Does this sound about right for a stock GTL?
