Hi I have read somewhere before that you can replace the receive diodes with Schottky diodes (1N5817/ECG - NTE583 . I was wondering what what number the diodes are so I could do this and if anyone on here has done this before ? What were your results.

The ECG number sounds right. Basically what they are supposed to do is give a lower forward voltage drop in the AM demodulator circuit, allowing more audio for a given signal level. I've seen the same effect from carefully measuring a stash of germanium detector diodes for a pair with the lowest voltage drop. The stock diodes typically have a 300mv +/- voltage drop, but if you look around in your junk bin, you may find some with less than 200mv drops. I've found them with as low as 170mv drops before, but thats rare.
