I had this question in another thread with a poor title so wanted to open a new one. MY Cobra 2k has very week receive. I have gone through the exercise of peaking all the related coils and have checked many of the transistors (if not all) along the receiver path from L4 and back. Also checked diodes 12,13,14,16, 68. Actually ended up replacing them anyways since I had them out.
Somewhat odd, but when you switch over to SSB, it is definitely "louder" in the speaker whereas on AM, it is very quiet. If I key up my portable handheld CB near the radio, it does pin the needle on the radio but again there is almost no hiss, ground noise, or anything on AM even with volume turned up all the way. On SSB, like I said it is "loud". But I am not convinced SSB is "ok" though--because even though it is louder, the needle does not move at all except when I key my handheld near it. I am waiting to actually hear chatter on my other base as a control (been really dead last couple of days--no skip to even listen to). Then when I do, I will see if i can hear it on the Cobra.
