It's hard to sound good when the carrier is pinched. Over modulating might make you loud, but it does so at the expense of sounding good. Instead of pinching the carrier, it is better to add more power and keep the signal clean.

So from what i understand these radios were built for and used in keydown competitions. They were built for a single purpose and it wasnt to warn the Rubber Duck about the bear in the air. What techs sell as competition now is nothing more than another catchy name for a super tune.
