Yes it has.
Chicago gets a bad rap but yes there are some extremely bad areas here. Most of it is a two square area on the west and south side. The sad part it's moving towards the downtown and magnificent mile area which the big tourist traps. Even though I live in the burbs I work downtown and I see some of it everyday. I don't plan on staying here all that much longer, not totally because of the crime but Chicago is a very expensive area to live in.
For 8 years I commuted from Valparaiso to Midway Airport. Off the Dan Ryan and onto either 55th street or Garfield for a ride through the unsavory part of the south side. The CPD guys at Midway gave me a few pointers to survive the drive. It was awful and when I needed a break I took Cicero Ave. to the Borman.
I dislike Chicago for many reasons but the gang and ghetto situations are the top two.
