Well, here is what I did. Paul (2IR473) had a bunch of Maxon VHF stuff for sale. I ended up buying the lot of it. Luckily he happened to have a programmer as well, so setting them to the MURS freqs was an easy task. Here is what I'm using now.

Maxon 2150- 4 channel 25 watt, used as base on small power supply.

Maxon 4150- 16 channel 40 watt, in both mobiles using Larsen antenna.

Maxon 5150 HT- 5 watt hand held. Got this one off ebay, after Paul told me they were good ht's that used the same programmer.

The thing to keep in mind if buying biz band vhf radio's is that most of them need a special cable or programmer. Try to get radio's that will use the same programmer, because they aren't cheap! If you should get Maxon's, let me know because I can program several models of those with this programmer.

So far I am VERY impressed with the range of these things. I regularly talk to the base from 40 miles away, no problem. I still haven't done a test to see just how far away the range is, but 40 miles pretty much covers my normal work area, so I'm happy. I have use the pll tones but really don't have too, as it seems I'm the only one using MURS here right now.

And one last thing, don't think the Maxon biz rigs are the same as their CB's....these radio's are built heavy with police/emergency use in mind. Very nice stuff.

Some things to keep in mind. Frequencys 154.570 and 154.600 are still widely used for businesses. I pickup places like walmart, home depot ect. The Motorola Spirit M series radios come with these frequencys in them and I think the new xtn series by Motorola radios do too and these radios are very popular. And also there is only 2 watt limit on Murs so just be aware of how much power you decide to run. In some areas 50 watts may go unnoticed and in others it may not. Believe me the FCC does monitor the VHF band so just watch your back. Not trying to say anything because I use Murs on my Kenwood th-g71a and Icom ic-207. Anyway just wanted to point that out. 73s.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D">
