Since sooner or later most police agencies will probably go digital and encrypt their coms.....do you think the scanner makers will ever be able to make a scanner that will decrypt the encrypted transmissions...or will that take a quantum leap in technology?

I'm sure the technology is here now but federal law will not allow it.Even if it were legal it doubt the big communication companies would allow it.

Lots of scanners will decode digital transmissions such as EDACS and APCO25 however AFAIK if the transmission is encrypted then no scanner on the market will be able to decode it.

You just have to have a connection at the local Motorola dealer, buy a suitable radio and get the encryption codes from your contact.

Can be done, has been done, but if you get caught with the radio you are on your own.

(Edit: Codes is probably the wrong term here, algorithms is probably correct)

I have worked in public safety for a long time .... The KEY for the scramble used by police and sheriff offices is well protected by the agencys they will jail you if you get caught and the charge is federal ....

NOTE ... VERY LITTLE is scrambled my agancy uses if only when they need to .....

Agreed with all that. I know a couple guys that either work or did work in the telecommunications field and serviced police, fire, and EMS services and they would not tell you squat about any encryption for fear of loosing their jobs and their bonding. Yes, they were bonded in order to work on some of the federal radio equipment. One such guy was actually an RCMP officer that worked in communications and he couldn't even talk about some of the radio systems they used in high profile events like the G7 summits etc.

MOST officers don't care if you lissen to them in fact it is in a way good since it gives them many more eyes and ears.....

That is understandable.....our public safety encrypts all transmissions 24/7....and its a small town.

I think this is just 1 more step toward a police state....just like the police being armed like the military.

The Bank of America incident in North Hollywood a number of years ago justified that IMHO. It's not like they walk around with machines guns slung over their shoulder all the time like in a lot of countries.

That is coming.....besides back in the day gangsters robbed banks with tommyguns and BARs....and the country did not turn into a police state.

And a lot more cops and innocent civilians were killed back then too. You just didn't see it pasted all over the national news. When the gang bangers and drug dealers are better armed than the police something is not right. Many years ago I was in a country where the city police walked around with a pistol as well as a sub-machine gun slung over their shoulder. I asked one cop if it was really that bad there and should I be worried. His reply was not to be worried and just stay out of problem areas like back alleys and the seedier sections. The sub was for his protection as he never knew when he walked around a corner what kind of shit was going down in the street and he wanted to at least have an even chance. Normal civilians were pretty much ignored however the police and military were open targets by the criminals. It made me appreciate just how much better we have it here even if we may not think so.
