ive read a lil here and there about this mod and im kind of curious now . it seems to be a fairly popular mod . does it make the recieve of the radio really wake up or is it a more gentle effect ?

It raises the sensitivity about 1.5db and reduces the air noise somewhat. the NB also works better. One man's "big difference" is anothers "not-so-much".

I had this done to my DX2517, as well as the RX transistor swap to a 2sc2999. It improves the signal to noise ratio. I can now turn the RF Gain down to where there is almost no white noise at all, but signals really jump out when they are there, even rather weak ones. It is kind of like operating a 2510 or a Lincoln.
