Does weather affetc skip?

Hello,

propagation through F2/F1 doesnt care about wheater, but sunspots....rigth

Propagation through TROPO does care about wheater (air pressure)but is not availible on 27mhz.

Propagation through E the so called sproadice E works with "es-clouds".
Now, the strange thing is that i have actually a thousands and thousands of qso's
with this kind of propagation.
As it was my hobby in the early days (over 60 countries confirmed using only 4watts/40ch/fm modulation).

One thing i noticed that to make the smallest "hop" it always happens around midday.
A country like Belgium or east coast England (only 300km away) was very very difficult..too far for ground wave and to close using "hops".
The otherthing is that with (funny u mention that too) thunderstorms comming up propagation tended to be towards South UK (im in North Holland)

Now, this is not based on any "proof" besides activity since 1987 almost every day.
Though my impression is backed up by the top FM dxers here in Europa
They have had the same impression.
(for those intrested 27,315 FM up and down 10khz)...when u hear Europa on 38LSB with 5/6and up u migth start to hear a couple FM dxers aswell.

Im now at the stage it has happend to often, it only needs to be confirmed bysome professor.
That will take a while as the "propagation geniuses" still debat about what causes and how Sproadic E propagation works.

Regards,

Henry

European diathermy machines is most likely what you were hearing.

When I was freebanding alot I used to hear what I called a waterfall gurgling ....when that would happen the band would start to open up a bit....sometimes...and everyone that was in my area would hear it as well,so I know it want just me

But since I get into ham radio I havent been hearing that water fall sound....or maybe I just havent been listening for it

Extended local CB propagation most certainly does work with large weather fronts here in the NYC area. It follows what happens on V/Uhf.

Sometimes I hear mobiles all the way up to Long Island and sometimes Atlantic City from home near Toms River. Most times this stuff cannot be heard.

That's a great time to fire up and make people think I have special stuff which I don't.

The only bands weather has any play in is VHF or high. And its only effect is DUCTING. Other than that NO weather has no impact.
Space weather has a huge effect in skip conditions.

Yeah but that's all groundwave propagation, not skywave propagation.

True but imagine the extended shot at the radio horizon. That would give much more of a chance to skywave especially when the band is spotty.

Why would ducting not work at high HF?

One of the causes of sporadic E propagation is windshear which in turn can be caused by severe thunderstorms so in effect yes weather can affect DX (skip). Sporadic E is evident on 11m.

As for general F layer DX weather has nothing to do with it. Sunspots and solar activity in general is the main cause.

"no skip can happen etc.."

Dear sir,

If im reading you correct your saying that the opposite is happening..that thunderstorms will somehow cause a "dx" empty spot.

Now, Captain Kilowatt comes up with why thunderclouds could influence the Sproadic E..
And that Sproadice E has to do with winds is already a known fact.
The exeption that there are still some professors who disagree in the way of how.

Im confinced due to thousands and thousands of qso's:
when there is thunder in the air propagation, through sproadic E tends to be towards the UK from here in North Holland.

Infact i think the thunderstroms always roll in from UK direction but ill have to verify that.

If your telling otherwise, please do be so kind and try to explain why you think that.

Kind regards,

Henry
