For a start, what is a pill? In reference to amps.
And why is it called a "single" side band if it has upper and lower?
I'm sure there will be plenty more as I discover them.
    TIA.

Pill is a transistor more pills = more power

Single sideband is single because one sideband is being separated from the carrier and other sideband.

Pill is just a slang term for an output transistor.

Ah, hell, I tried to put it in my own words, but couldn't fit it a bucket with no bottom, lol.

    So I copy/paste a link.

And to nip the next question in the bud, when a radio has uppers and lowers that is not the same as USB & LSB. Uppers and Lowers is a way of saying the radio has been modded with channels both above channel 40 and below channel 1. When you have a sideband radio (SSB) the two modes of sideband talking are USB and LSB. As an example a Galaxy 959 is a legal 40 channel sideband radio, this means the 3 modes of talking on those 40 channels is AM, USB, & LSB.

    Thanks for all the info.
    Here's one more:
Why do I hear station numbers? "this is 435 from west LA" or whatever. I undertand shortwave gets FCC issued station designations and are required to state them.

Alot of people will make up a set of numbers kind of like a call sign or handle.

I personally used numbers instead of a handle when i was on CB...one of those personal choice deals

Or because 'pill' is easier to pronounce and spell than 'transistor'.

Same thing with calling it a 'box' instead of 'amplifier'

Some CBers choke on big 3 or 4- syllable words.;)

There is no meaning to the numbers other than a way to identify yourself. Use your name if you want. If you get your ham licence
Then you are issued a letter number call sign thats on record and you can look up. I use a 3 digit number and my end of the state for talking skip and dx contacts
