El Cheapo BM800 Condenser Microphone

Anyone using one of these mics? I see they are fairly well received.

Lots of good reviews, though. K0PIR did some recordings in comparison to SM50. The BM800 stomped it.

This would be alot better. Antique. Conversation piece......if you get the pun. D104 would be great on that boom also.

It uses a 1/2" condenser mic element, which is OK but not what the big boys use in the real McCoys. Big boy mics use a 1" element and are powered by a special power supply (+48vdc). This mic uses USB 5vdc source. But I have heard some say that have used USB power from some mic mfrs, and they said it was acceptable.

But what is the most important thing are: how 'ruler flat' the freq response it is, how wide its sensitivity/dynamic range is, and the noise its electronics self-generates. The flatness of the freq response and the dynamic range parameters of a mic are key to the most natural sounding reproduction of voice. Just a FYI.

But for the price, the swing arm mic stand and the pop filter screen make it worthwhile if they have some build quality at all. You can upgrade to a better mic and still use that other hardware.

For what it is and what you get, hard to pass. The ones I've heard on air and in recordings, I must say it sounds good.

It also looks sorta cool, too.

For a simple element - the support circuitry seems impressive - large cap inputs to capture the most of the spectrum - simple FET input amp pickup.

What I find intriguing is the "square" the FET uses - almost like an inductive path a dedicated "specific" trace style to help with tuning. or perhaps just a Moniker for the Manufacture - like a branding of the circuit design.

Got it all setup today. Played around with the settings to where I think it sounds OK. Made numerous 40 meter contacts. Everybody said it sounded great. A few were very pleased with the performance. I used the included USB interface and made a few contacts with my ELAD. It performed very good. My son used it to record a YouTube video. Thinking of getting one for his room

I got bored last night and almost bought a PR40. I'm glad I didn't. So far, I am more than happy with the BM800. I hardly have any money invested in it. Not only does it sound good, it looks good in my shack.

Can't beat the price for what you get. Even if you hate the mic, everything else that comes with it can be used with something else.
