External S-Meter???

I'm wanting to replace the small unlighted s-meter on my Harris with a larger/ lighted/external one.Anyone know of a good external S-Meter? Can I just take the two wires off the back of the original meter and run them to the new meter?

Hook,

That's all you may have to do, but maybe not. You

need to find out what 'kind' of meter your 'S' meter

really is. Most meters are the same (either 100 miliamp

full deflection, or something else), but can require

almost anything for full deflection of the needle. If it's

a "standard" meter, then it's a simple remove/replace

thing.

If you can't mount the meter in the same place the old

one was, then make sure that it's in a metal and shielded

enclosure! You wouldn't believe the RFI an unprotected

'S' meter can pick up. You also run into calibrating the

new meter. That can be lots of 'fun' too...

Thanks Doc. No spec.s listed on the meter and checking the service manual only gives me a part #<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif ALT=""> . Guess I'll shoot a e-mail to Harris and see. On calibrating the meter, can I use the tone generator thats built into my Motorola R-1034A meter? It will put out 10 diff tones from 304-3200Hz, -40 to +3dbm and a +10db switch,output level @ 600 ohms.

I did a search for the Yokogawa co.,Got a 800#, Called them and found out it IS a 100 miliamp meter<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=""> Now I just have to decide on a meter and find out how to calibrate it.I found a post that says:"The correct way to set the "S" meter is to inject 100uV , 0 Modulation and set the meter to "S-9"." What are they talking about??:LOL I've switched back and forth between My FT-840 & FT-990 and get the same readings between the meters,I guess I could just switch between the Yaesu and Harris and adjust the new meter to the same readings on the Yaesu? I know...quick and dirty method but if I dont have the equipment to do it right I guess I can call it close enough<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/wink.gif ALT="">

Thanks Guys ! I think I'll go with the Workman MD-4. It's cheap ($25), BIG,looks nice,has that "purty" blue lighting(although I may change to green to match the display on radio),and is almost a plug-n-play.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif ALT="">

Glad to find the WORKMAN MD-4 S-Meter.

CB World Informer Jan 2002 has an article on adding to a radio without an external Jack.

I find an S-meter pretty handy while on the road.

Now if someone still sells them . . . .

LDG Electronics sells an external meter (FT-100) for a pair of Yaesu radios sold with meter jacks already installed.

Only other one I’ve found is:

K-PO S-27 External S-Meter

(With some sellers in the EU).

Plenty of discussions on calibration. W8WWV, in “S-Meter Blues” one of the more comprehensive.

My use is CB. Rolling the highway. Where a glance at the meter provides some context (as in, on one Interstate nearing another and reports of a wreck or similar. But which road?).

So dead-nuts accuracy isn’t the thing so much as relative differences between signals received.

Then, directional problems with antenna. Strong one way, but not some others.

Usually it’s about “loud”. Is that guy really as close as he sounds? Because I can’t hear who he’s replying to.

I’m moving and they are moving. And it’s next to never someone has a rig that’s “unidirectional” unless it’s a pilot car with roof mount.

More like weak & strong flashight beams moving in a faster arc (seconds) as they also arc more slowly following a road course (minutes).
