I went to Moonshiner 1408's house (formerly 506 northern MN) with the FC, the rubidium oscillator and an active probe to align the Frankensteins frequencies. Got half way through and the frequencies were way out of whack and suddenly wouldn't read steady.
Brought the radio home thinking something major was wrong, maybe I touched the wrong thing. Got it home and tried again, erratic counter behavior, unexpected resets and freezes, occasional blank screen. Turned out to be a bad solder joint in the counter power supply section. If you have one of these counters in the background and it starts to misbehave, there are two transistors on individual heat syncs and the heat syncs are not screwed to the board. The transistors move enough to crack the solder.
Frankenstein is a Cobra 148GTL board inside a Stalker Two using the stalkers wideband SSB filter. The orange LEDs make it look like it has tubes inside. Some day I will talk him out of this radio!
This radio is what happens when someone hands you two broken radios and says just make it work lol
