well I know this is an old thread, However I just wanted to put my two cents in just case anyone with a FT991 ( not A ) is interested in doing the mod .
I can tell you first off Im no electrical engineer nor a big radio tech just an old guy with a ft991 and an eBay soldering iron , a pair of old man readers ( glasses ) and sometimes patience ( emphasis on sometimes ) .
Its possible to do the " mars " mod and if your very careful its really no big deal
If I can do it bet you can as well .
Now here lies the rub , after completing the mod and doing a full hard reset you should be prepared for a whole lot of fiddling and adjusting in the menus especially the set up menus there's over 100 things and a lot of them you need to be prepared to adjust. Just know you're gonna have to do the side band settings and if you really want to use this on a.m. which I don't you'll have to do that on a.m. settings as well.
I didn't have anybody down the street to talk to as I was doing the settings so I had to set up a spare radio with a mag mount antenna outside and adjust all the modulations etc. etc. etc.
Now I get great audio reports, good signal reports and it saved me from having to buy a linear amplifier. That was the main reason I did the mod, well that and I've had this radio sitting around for a few years only using it occasionally as a receiver .
