Hey all! I was thinking about getting a 98 to use for a base. I know I could use an amp like I have been ,but I want to simplify and change things up. I have an Imax 75' up and an astron VS70m power supply. The highest swr I have ever saw with my antenna setup is 1.2-1. I am seeing about 325 pep right now and with a properly tuned 98 I can get 225. How much punh will I loose talking skip on Am? Talking to the locals probably wont matter.Anybody got any thoughts on this? I know the 98 isnt the best ,just wanna try one ..Thanks for your thought!!!

no one will be able to tell the difference between 325 and 225 watts.
if you were to drop down from 325 to about 80 watts, that would only be 1 less S-unit in someone's receive.

yes and add to that in skip land its just conditions you maybe stronger
with less watts. watts dont = progation

you are very right hotrod.

propagation rules wattage drools.

when conditions are favorable, i can get heard on channel 6 with a 2 pill and be considered a big strapper.

lazyman, if you do purchase this radio, please come back to this thread or start a new one and tell us how you like it.
pics of the insides are always welcome too!

if ya want better dx performance start with a better antenna .a 3-5 element
yagi on the flatside will be a great choice. but still wont make or break a dx contact

I am running one mobile in my 00 Envoy. I keep the power level set at 9:00 and let it swing from there.
Had nothing but flowers from everyone I have ever talked with on it.
I approve this message and highly recommend the 98VHP.
:D

If your amp section in the radio goes out, you got nothing to talk on. If you run a single or dual final radio with an amp and the amp goes out, you can still talk.

The 98 is a nice radio for sure, I don't know if I would say the best unless you mean best price (most expensive). Thats what the VHP stands for, very high price. That said if you talk mostly AM and dabble on SSB then it will be fine. If you do mostly SSB or like to mess with FM you will want to try something different. While not as bad as the older 88 & 99's the new 98 does drift alittle and does not even have FM.

Galaxy 98VHP the best so far!

Been running one in my RAV-4 for about 2 months, I get more flowers with this radio than any radio, or radio and AMP combo that I have ever had in my RAV. I tuned the receive in the radio for the RAV, set the gain in the radio (adjusted one pot) in the radio to take advantage of my W5000 this combination works extreamly well, weather its skip or ground wave I am talking......Oldtimer

i would assume the 325 watts was on am pep?those radios do about 250 on ssb and are loud talkers on am but lack on ssb as far as modulation is concerned.am should be measured in average power not pep!while pep makes the meter look better it is not true power and most all radios have higher output on ssb not am.i am not a big fan of the 98 but love the 95t2 but its still a good radio.be careful not to key down to long for the fets run hot.that should make a great base radio and a imax 75 feet wow awesome great antenna.you should have no problems talking dx with that set up thats for sure.good luck and 73s.
