Galaxy Coils, factory or fubar?

I have a Galaxy DX66 wich someone did all the truckstop mods to, clipped tr32, added diode behind resistor ("swing kit") and who knows what else, i'm bringing it back towards it's factory spec, I tried to reform the coils I noticed were spread. My question is, did the coils actually come spread?
In this photo found at CBTricks.com, we see a Galaxy 33hp. Clearly the copper here does not form a perfect coil by any means.

Here is my DX66 that I am restoring towards factory spec. I put a little effort at reforming the shape (I assumed)
the coils would have leaving the factory, I know it's not perfect, i'm not done.

Was I wrong to reshape the coils into what I thought was factory, or is the case really that the Galaxy 33hp pictured on CBTricks had already been screw-drivered? I never had the pleasure of buying one these new so I haven't a clue. Thanks for any input gentlemen. 73
 

I have seen some straight from the factory that one or two of the coils were spread in the center a little. I would just leave them where they were on tose when it came in like that. could be some thing they do from harmonics from the radio. not sure what they are doing when I see this.

You did it right to reform the coils (push them back together). The one that's pictured on CBTricks was tinkered with... When I re-compress the coils back together, I will (carefully) put a dab of superglue across the coil on top so the coils stay compressed together and won't open up again.

Filter circuits use both a disc cap and a coil to attain a specific freq tune. In this case, that filter traps the first harmonic of 27mhz - which is 54mhz - and grounds them so they aren't transmitted. So, if any adjustment is made, it is done by the factory to ensure that they pass FCC regs concerning harmonic content..

People that spread these coils are just letting the 54mhz harmonics leak out and be read by a wattmeter, so as to kid themselves that the radio is putting out more power. I like clean, honest power from my radios . . . nothing less . . .

I agree with false watts being useless otherthan to cause interferance. I dont have access to a sprectrum analyzer so that's why im so concerned. I have read these exports are already bad when it comes to IMD & I believe clean is mean.

ExitThirteen, thanks I thought it didn't look right. I'm going to try and reform them best as possible without desoldering them and risk burning up the varnish coating.

Sonoma, thank you for the response, one of my concerns is that I may have undone a factory "spread" no sprectrum analyzer, im going to have see if anyone has a virgin dx66 just to peek inside.
I know no two radios are identical due to manufacturing tolerances, so one factory adjustment may not look like another. One more reason to get a sprectrum analyzer i suppose.
