Hey everyone.

Last month I bought a DX-99v2 and did the conversion myself. I brought it to a guy here in Massachusetts who has been doing CBs for 30 years or so. I was having all sorts of problems on SSB...no one could hear me and I could not hear anyone.

So long story short, he did $250 worth of work on the damn thing...way more than I wanted to spend. He found a bad crystal and replaced it, redid my conversion, peaked & tuned, aligned SSB and meter, modulation, unlocked clarifier etc.

He said from his bench it is working great on SSB, and talked to Minnesota etc. Before I could not get anybody. I knew something was wrong, I am just glad it is fixed.

I should have gotten a Stryker from Bells is what I am thinking. I paid $310 for the radio plus $250 fixing the thing, and it is brand new.

Do you guys think I paid too much to get this thing sorted, or would that be the going rate about? He said he would call me if the fix was going to cost half of what the radio is worth, but he did not. Kind of upset about that.

Might just be my last Galaxy...ever.

I just talked to the fella for a while.

Let me try to explain a bit:

The service itself was a $20 part, plus $75 worth of labor.

The clarifer, peak and tune + SSB tuning, meter etc. was what I requested that was not included in the service. He did not call me because the service price was only about $100.

He is a nice guy and I am happy to buy local when I can, I am just happy it is sorted now. The Strykers etc. he sells out of his shop are $500 tuned, and people pay it.

I am satisfied now, but yes, it is very expensive but people say his work is top notch.

There's a shop here that charges $85.00 ph for work on any radios.. Needless to say he doesn't get much business from the CBers.. :-/

That is why you should buy a radio from a shop that does good tech work. This way the radio gets converted, tuned, aligned, and shipped once. When the radio arrives it's plug and play with a warranty.

Too many people think they are "saving money" by getting a radio at Copper or H&Y and then convert it themselves. Next question is that radio should have been covered under warranty right?

Ya know, I really should have contacted Galaxy. I should have known better than to bring it to a shop instead of having warranty work done to it. His prices in general are quite high, but I will see tomorrow when I get it back if it was worth it.

Couple hundred bucks is meaningless in the long term. Live and learn I suppose.

I don't know how the warranty would have worked out since you did the conversion, but that shop you used would be crossed off my list.

Ranger, Magnum, Stryker and Galaxy make these radios to be converted. They understand that they will likely be converted. As long as the conversion itself doesn't cause damage, they WILL honor your warranty.

Well I did 500 miles with it yesterday and had nothing but good reports down the east coast, whereas before I got pretty much nothing. I used a 3' Lil Wil and was talking clearly to another guy from New Haven to some 40 miles south of NYC on Rt. 95. That is some 120 miles I figure.

I had the mag mount on a new F-150 and I could not be more impressed with it. Puts my Firestik to shame. I am going to rebuild the mount on my Jeep when I get home and I hope to get some good results like I have with the Wilson. Love the radio..I am over the price thing. Pretty much.
