I'm listening to 38 LSB with my Galaxy Noise Filter turned on and the tone on high and with a small external speaker plugged in. The external speaker is one I bought back in the early Eighties. It's small, round, metal grill, pivoting mounting bracket and has a metal mic clip post on it's backside. With the GNF switched on the speaker is resonating at a annoying sound frequency but I think that if I add dampening material on the inside then that will change it's resonance. It takes a little getting used to but strong stations I'm receiving sounds fairly decent. My thought is that if you use a upper midrange tweeter with the proper filtering, the sound could be a whole lot better using the GNF feature on this radio. Has anyone else done any experimenting on this? Is there a GNF circuit mod that can improve on the sound quality? Your thoughts :pop:

I've had a few radios that gave a high pitched white noise when the volume is down low. I put an 8 ohm 4.44db attenuator in mine copied from a ham site and it cleaned it up a fair bit for me. What frequency of noise is giving you trouble?

I was talking about sound frequencies. Filter caps and chokes. Just like in a high fidelity speaker. Years ago I stuffed a kenwood external speaker that was hooked up with a Kenwood company fm radio in my truck that used a repeater. That changed it's resonance. I'm thinking that the external speaker I'm using on my 959 is cheap. Most likely a good aftermarket external speaker will clean up the sound coming from the radio. :thumbup1:

Now that you've mention it,my 959 has white noise on ssb. I have it on 38lsb,volume halfway up,re gain all the way down and I still hear 4444 talking skip from Cali. Just one more reason to get this radio tuned and aligned. :confused1:
