What is a TXO?:I found this on another forum. One of the cheapest and easiest things to do is insulate the TXO so that ambient temperature doesn't have as great an impact on it, but a lot of techs won't take the 5 minutes of time to do this. Clip, cut, twist and send them out the door.

I wouldn't pay attention to the counter, tune with your ears.The counter is just eye candy.

They are pretty . I'm using both ears(5 digit freq counter?!) 1.will insulating a TXO keep it from drifting? 2.will looming the radio's wire's keep it from drifting? 3. What is a TXO? :blink:
 
TXO= transmitter oven, more commonly known as TXCO, transmitter crystal oven. A procedure where insulation and a heating element is installed around a crystal to reduce rate of drift usually by 10 times. google for homebrew TXCO and read all you want.

Does it work though? Why is Galaxy the goofy one in this area? What do you think ought to be done to a Galaxy to get it to act right?
 
This is from some forum:I don't understand the high price for a crystal oven. At one time the temperature controlled crystal oven was the ultimate in stability. I think broadcast stations were required to use them as the station reference. I don't think they see much use these days as most of the modern broadcast transmitters use a Rubidium standard as the clock and frequency standard, much more accurate.

Perhaps the price has gone up because there is little demand for them but I doubt it. I see them in surplus dealers all the time for dirt cheap. Just wondering what you are home brewing that you would need such high precision.
By the way, a

TCXO is a Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator.

An OCXO is an Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator.

Both of these devices typically contain the oscillator as well as the frequency stabilizing components in a single unit. There is also such a thing as a seperate crystal oven that is only the oven with a crystal in ******Sooooooooo....what do-hickie on the 959's board do I need to at least put a blanket around or/and find a oven for it?

Yep. I have but I'm the kind that wants Porsche performance. Just buy the Porsche next time. I am very pleased with my 959 for the most part. I get nothing but 'sounds good!' Everywhere I go. :D:pop::thumbup: P.S. I've been trying out my K40 Speech Processor mic on it. Though not as loud,it does an excellent job as far as I'm concerned.

That's a cool read! I thought about trying just insulating the crystal just to keep it more stable as I talk on the 959 which heats things up but might put a transistor inside and regulate the voltage.
 
I've read where people have put small light bulbs next to the crystal to get it warm quicker and keep it warm. Something more consistent than the radio warming it up as you try to chase it.
