Hello guys I'm 15 and from NYC and have been into CBs ever since my dad introduced them to me when I was 5.

I got a summer job recently and I have some money to spend on what ever I want. Me being in love with radios my whole life I wanted to get a really good CB radio.

I was looking at different models and I narrowed it down to the galaxy 959 because it seems to be the best CB radio.

I was just wondering how does it preform stock? Like Audio wise and stuff like that. I want to keep the radio stock and it will be paired up with the "Lil Will" Antenna. I'm also getting a Astatic636 mic with it.

How will this radio with my setup preform stock? Will I have good audio? I don't need to be LOUD but I do want to have nice audio.

Thanks In Advance for any Help!

The 959 is my favorite CB. Galaxy has a good reputation and excellent service. I think they do just fine for a CB

Fine radio, but I wouldn't use the Lil Wil antenna. Go with a Wilson 1000 or 5000.

Im 1-5 (one five) from HI. Its a fine radio. easy chan mod and it comes with a freq counter, where can you go wrong..

heres some pics of where I mounted the chan switches. Had to grind part of the inner chassi of the radio to do this...

enjoy.

Welcome to the Forum MF424 .......The 959 is fine radio right out of the box AM/SSB ! The stock mic will even sound very nice with it.IM with Kevin on steering away from the Lil Wil and just get yourself a 1000,better all around antenna which handles more if in the future you decide to upgrade. I'd have to say 90% of all of this is about a good antenna. :) Good Luck to you.

agree with everyone its all about antennas.your antenna
will decide how well your radio works.ive never had the
galaxy 959 .but the newer cobra148 they now make i had
wasnt really impressed with it.if ya ever come across a
old president grant or uniden grantxl nab it thier very
good cbs easy mods and tune up great.as far as mics
i perfere the rk56 over the 636l but thats just me.

Well I already have a Lil Wilson antenna so I will be using it for now. I will get the 5000 in the future, gonna have to wait for the next pay check in mid August :) You guys think its possible for me to shoot skip with my setup? Ive been told you don't need any mods to shoot skip, it all depends on the conditions.

I will not be doing any mods to the radio.

with no mods are extra power on the radio , chances are slim on AM but on SSB you should do fine as long as DX (skip) is rolling your way. IM guessing you will be in a car ? if so , you can climb high , mountains , foothills , ect. ect. even on the top of parking structures with clearence, this will also help your situation in a big way.

Ok thank you for that reply about the SSB. Do you think I Will be loud when I talk on channel 19 on AM with this radio stock? Also I'm going to be running regular power with this CB. No amps or anything like that.

19 ? That's usually a crowded channel , but chances are , if you can hear them ,you can talk to them , you will learn the value of your Signal meter on who's closest and furthest from you. I'll be up front with you , a tuned up radio will certainly be a better way to go if at all possible on your part ? Depending on where you buy it ? There's a good chance they might offer a tune for 20 or so dollars more , the audio with the stock mic on those 959s are pretty good stock , chances are you will just crank up the mic gain on the radio all the way on AM and just talk into the mic , SSB you will more then likely not need to turn the audio gain up as much. You always talk further on SSB then you will AM . (for the most part)

I think you can.

galaxy 959

I've always run the galaxy radios and i can tell you this. The tech support is awsome,2 year parts and labor waranty, cant beat it sir.As for the galaxy 949 and the 959 they are very stable radios, easy channel mods if you decide to do them. And as for peaking&tuning that radio i would!..Like the other guy said for 20-30 bucks it's well worth it if you want to talk on channel 19,when everybody and their brother is on the air.You will love the rodger beep and talkback is awsome loud!,install a echo board and you will be top shelf.Just my opinon.Have fun,bigun297 in the flatlands of kansas, hope i hear ya shootin skip, later
