How far from desk mic?

I agree with all of the above. Close-talking a mic will allow for the best signal/noise ratio from an audio point of view. It eliminates the background npise etc. 99.99% of the time an amplified mic is not required to fully modulate a radio and extra gain is almost never NEEDED if you talk close to the mic.

I agree! It does not matter if it is a dynamic mic or an electrete close talking is the best method or producing a deep, rich, life like tone with minimal back ground noise. Plus on most all electrete mics you get a field effect when talking close to the mic that tends to enhance the lows which is a plus for rag chewing with the locals!
