I built a hot Cobra 29 for a local boy and he blew it up...

I already planned to fix it... but how many times should I fix it if he keeps doing the same crap over and over? I plan to fix it so I don't look like a jackass. ..

I would love to see a video of this "hot rod mod" with a tone generator controlling the output of the radio at full power to see what it will do and how long it will last.

How much do you charge to hack-rod a Cobra 29???

depends... 50-75 depending on what all they want done... so far people have said they are clean sounding and very punchy without being over modulated

I typically do the IRF520, a bunch of companion parts, L14 gets one tune taken out of the coil, adjustable RF power and and tune and alignment, modulation limiter is left intact...

they end up making around the same on an AVG meter as a 1969, maybe a little more and way more on the PEP scale.

I have been meaning to do a Video Gate on one... just have not had the time really

Show me the scope!

This is the only scope he's got access to:

I would be interested to see it as well... something I have never bothered to tried to do...

never saw any reason to test a radio at 100% output for long periods of time since your voice does not hold a radio at 100% output for ever... your voice goes up and down and most people are not on the key and talking for more than a few minutes at a time, hell most are less than that...

I have one radio sitting here that has no receive on 1-18... it' in the scrap bin/parts bin... I am tempted to try this on it and see how long it can run... it would be interesting to say the least

I was thinking about converting it to be a dedicated transistor test rig...but this could be a fun little test...

That is precisely why you do it to establish duty cycles and when they are pushed past that point then all bets are off but if we were to do these duty cycle test then we know what our rigs are capable of an then develope regulators to make sure our rigs are reliable.

Hot Rods are notoriously unreliable and if we put our names behind that modification then we become liable for their unreliability.

see you brought up a very good point there... I don;t think I have ever seen anyone do that with a similarly modded radio... (ie Cobra 29 mosfets, etc)

That's why a reputable technician won't do that sort of hack job, it's not reliable. If you want a 50w radio, buy a 50w radio …

Next issue is where do you get the voltage to bias those mosfets? it's like 4 to 6 volts dc, correct?

look I don;t go looking for people... they find me through word of mouth, simple as that... people are happy with the work...

recently someone sent me a test job... they wanted to figure out how honest I was... and to see if I could diagnose the problem...

this all started with me doing my own radios in the basement... then I did a few radios for friends for free... then other people started showing up... before too long I really did not have much time... then the wife got pissed and I had to start making money to keep her off my case... you get the point...

but honestly you can not say it is a hack job until the radio is put through it's paces... hell I may get the radio on my bench and it might be fine... I just don;t know until I get it back here...

and further more this is the only radio that I have ever had problems with that I built for someone...

promodmerc on cbradiotalk is happy with his Cobra 29 LX... he is a local guy, just a couple towns over, his is doing around 35 ish PEP on the swing... it was not setup quite the same way as this one...

just google it... there are several walk thrus out there for a Cobra 29 mosfet conversion... I have tried most of the conversions out there and borrowed from others until I got a combo that I liked.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul is the issue, not knowing how to do this modification.

Where are you tapping this voltage from?
