issues programing UV5RC

A friend picked up a UV5RC today and we could not get it to program

I know it uses the same cable as a TYT and pretty much all china specials

anyway, I tried the software and it would just flash up and down on the screen for a few minutes then die,

tried CHirp and it did not see the radio

tried his cable, tyt brand and it would not even work with windows 7 64bit

tried my cable and it's kinda worn out...

I am at a loss here

I forget where I read it but I saw a post that said the driver support for uv5r was sabotaged in recent windows releases. You might try to program it on a win9x boxen.
