Just got a new Uniden Grant LT...and all set up nice, too

I finally got a brand new Uniden Grant LT. I've never had one of these radios (although I did have the older Cobra 148 GTL). I had Justin at F.G. Best do all of his mods to it. He did everything he knows how to do (except add frequencies and echo / talkback boards).

When I took it home, I monitored myself with headphones on my Icom 746 Pro. First I only had the stock mic for it. I couldn't believe how nice the audio quality was on it and how good it sounded with a stock mic. I got a lot of nice compliments from locals like "wow, what radio is that!", and "that's a stock mic?". A few days later, I wired up a Turner +3 for it and it just sounds great. Another local told me that the radio was "absolutely perfect, crisp, clean audio". Now THAT's what I like to hear.

Another thing i couldn't believe about the radio was the RX sensitivity. I can't believe how low the noise floor is yet how senstive it is for a CB.

Although Justin went through all the mods he did with me, I don't remember everything. Maybe he will jump in here and refresh my memory. I'm sure it was a good radio initially, but with all the mods, it is truely a great radio.

Hello Tim, a few comments,

The Uniden Grant XL, or LT is the same exact radio as the 148GTL. (the older style before cost cutting changes) We had done our high performance modification, including all audio capacitor changes, inceasing the gain of the TX mixer, bias RF bypassing and stability, modified RX bandpass, and the gasfet front end, for a lower noise floor, and improved S/N radio, not to mention the increased adjacent channel rejection. I am happy that you are pleased with the radio.

Take care,

Justin

The GaAsFET front end explains a lot of the great signal to noise ratio. I had forgotten that you did that. Too bad every CB can't have a receiver that good!

You know Justin, it has been this way for a long time. And all of the Manufactures are guilty of it, look at something a small as a diode, for years many radios have used crappy diodes in NB circuits, and replacing them with a better quality one only costs a few cents more, but some accountant some were said " Man These are 12 cents cheaper, we buy 50,000 of these, we save 6 Grand!" so the dollar rules and it is all about profit.

Well folks have you guys noticed the latest Cobra's are a little different? Cobra no longer has Maxon manufacturing their CB's. The new manufacturer seems to be doing a little better job.

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes
